Island Atelier is an online publication that focuses on art, design and fashion in the Caribbean and internationally. This long-standing client has been through a number of branding and design changes since its launch in 2008 as the needs and expectations of the online publications have changed.

A Regional Spotlight

We chose a bold colour for the logo which helps to provide cohesion for the brand across several media platforms and stationery.

Over the years, we have been retained to develop and refine the brand identity. The last brief was to create a highly visual but modern website, branding, logotype and business cards for this electronic-based publication, as well as the provision of editorial content.

As Island Atelier’s mandate is the promotion of architecture, art and design in the Caribbean, we created a structured font in a bold colour to act as a counterpoint to the common cliché of blue water, palm trees and synonymous with the Caribbean region. As a nod to the people and culture of the region, a stylised palm tree was included as a secondary branding item.

As Island Atelier’s mandate is the promotion of architecture, art and design in the Caribbean, the logo is based on an elegant word mark and custom typography which takes its inspiration from the palm or coconut tree which is ubiquitous in the region, while the angular typeface is reminiscent of a city scene. This discordance was designed to show there is more to the region than the stereotypical sun, sand and sea and that below the surfeit, serious and impactful work is also being done.
